Muay Thai history

Muay Thai, or the “Art of Eight Limbs,” focuses on striking using the eight points of contact: fists, elbows, knees and feet. It uses the power of rotation in the hips to deliver dynamic punches, kicks, elbows and blocks.

Muay Thai originated on the battlefields of Southeast Asia in the 15th century. It evolved from muay boran, an ancient form of boxing. Muay Thai was most likely used by the Thai (Siamese) against their adversaries, the Burmese, after losing their weapons in battle.

Besides being a lethal fighting technique, Muay Thai is a popular sport in Thailand, and has been for hundreds of years. The civility of the sport has evolved since the early days of bare-knuckled fights with the hands wrapped in hemp (which inflicted more damage upon the opponent). After the 1930s, gloves, cups and mouth guards, as well as weight classes were instituted.
Muay Thai fighters are known for their devastating kicks and knee and elbow strikes, which combine speed, accuracy and power. The techniques and principles taught in this martial art can be employed offensively and defensively.

Today, Muay Thai is becoming increasingly popular outside of Thailand. Because of its versatility, many professional fighters have strong Muay Thai backgrounds.
